As part of SOTA's Almanac Trajectory that invites to re-think Fair Arts Practices. Click here for more info.
Engagement Arts in collaboration with SOTA is providing a conversation about accessibility on the 20th of November. With the growing awareness of current ableist narratives in the arts, they are giving space to voices of people with disabilities in thearts to share their testimonies. Within the formal setting of an installation a close-up invitation to listen to their stories opens an informal reflection on the obstacles these artists experience and their needs for a more accessible art practice. Next to this there will be a textual art object, a tool to unpack the invisible barriers of how deeply rooted an ableist bias can be.
The audio-installation of testimonies (mostly in NL and some in ENG) will be accessible from 13 h until 17 h.
The event is for free and is part of an atelierspace set up by Simon Allemeersch in the current exhibition of Fernand Deligny. It is important to pass through the entrance desk to get a sticker that gives one free access. With our current funding possibilities we unfortunately aren't able to make the installation accessible for the needs of d/Deaf people. If you have any other needs concerning accessibility, please let us know. Transcription of the interviews can be provided, later on, if needed.
We're very much looking forward to welcoming you to this event and also to engage with you in informal discussions on accessibility over a free cup of tea or coffee!
The content creation is supported by Kunstenpunt; and the event is subsidised by the VGC.
For this meeting, we would like to create a place for sharing experiences and practicing listening. We are especially interested in talking about challenges locally, both in art institutions and art education. If people are interested, we’ll also update you about the work we have done and what we are still planning.
As we all need a break, we organize one open meeting for the summer. But we are looking forward to an open meeting to share and listen. If there are important matters in august you need/want to talk about, know that you can still reach us through email.
Considering that the accessibility of an online meeting is not depending on the geographical location in the same time zone and as many people feel a bit flooded by screen time, we will organize only one online open meeting this month, for both Engagement Ghent and Brussels.
The devision between the two was always geographically and although there are of course specificities about the cities, we feel that most of the conversations fit in both groups. The set up of this meeting stays the same: we try to create a space for sharing and listening, working on a safer space together.
In this meeting, we would like to create a place for sharing experiences of power abuse, sexism and discrimination in the artfield and practicing listening.

The third (online) meeting of the new year! Online meetings show to be less limited by geographical location but nonetheless we notice that the Ghent meetings are adding something to the Brussels one. Happy to continue them with new and known faces.
The online meeting format has made the meetings more accessible and makes us welcome a lot of new faces, which is just great. We look forward to the third online meeting of this year in which we continue the sharing of experiences and the learning from each other.
The second (online) meeting of the new year. As always, you are welcome to share experiences or to just listen. We would like to hear your desires, expectations, thoughts and plans for Engagement Ghent this year.
The online meeting format has had surprising positive side-effects; we have been welcoming many people from different (geographical) places and the encounters have been very nourishing for us. Thus we are very happy to organize the second online meeting of this year, hoping to continue the sharing of experiences and the learning from each other.
We are organising an open meeting for people with disabilities in the arts. The upcoming theme-issue of rekto:verso on ableism, and the research of our core-member Josefien Cornette on ableism in art education, grants us the opportunity to provide the tools and space for a special open meeting. We prioritize people with disabilities in the arts, yet leave the meeting open for all to join. We are happy to listen to your requests on accessibility if needed. The meeting will be online.

Based on the idea that our bodies are self healing, but nevertheless often socialized to be self destructive, we will in this lab be working towards developing tools and techniques for sensing when its the time to care for, protect or defend ourselves in specific situations. We will look at how our nervous system is also connected to a bigger system of nervous systems, such as other individuals (being human or non human), and to our communities and larger environment. We will work with inherited memory and looking into ways of hacking our messed up habits. Translating this knowledge into a collective body, we will also examine how to use our developed tools in the constellation of the body of an institution, of a collective, of a group, and in relation to the non-human world.
The Skill Share is inclusive and open to all genders and bodies, but encourages individuals who identify or have been identified as female to participate. The work doesn’t require any experience neither as as dancer/mover or in an artist or activist environment. Just come as you are and with clothes that you feel comfortable and can move in. SKILLSHARE was created to redistribute knowledge and expertise throughout the arts community in Brussels and is financed by Engagement.
